Replacing the alternator brushes – Opel Cadet

Alternator Bosch

■ Remove the two screws securing the voltage regulator. It is not necessary to remove the alternator from the car.

■ Remove the voltage regulator and measure the length of the carbon brushes, counting from the sliding surface to the edge of the housing.

■ Brushes that are too short must be replaced, by desoldering the incoming braided wires.

■ Insert new brushes and solder the wires. You should grab the wire with universal pliers just behind the soldering point, to avoid excessive tin penetration into the braid.

■ Clamp the stranded wire in an insulated place.

■ Check, that the brushes slide easily in the housing.

■ Screw the voltage regulator back on.

 

Alternator Delco Remy

■ Remove the alternator from the car.

■ Mark the relative position of the covers

■ Undo the three bolts connecting the covers.

■ Pull the rotor out of the rear cover together with the front cover. Note, in order not to damage the ends of the stator winding

■ Loosen the pulley nut. If the rotor axis has a hexagonal hole, then a suitable hex key should be mounted in a vice, put the rotor on it and only then unscrew the nut

■ Pull off the pulley and fan

■ Press the rotor out of the bearing, remove the spacer ring.

■ Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the two screws securing the carbon brush housing.

■ Replace the brushes, if they have reached their limit length. They are held in the housing by tabs.

■ Check, that the brushes slide freely in the housing.

■ Secure the brushes and the springs in the housing against slippage with kinked wire. This wire must then be pulled out of the housing.
Perform further work in reverse order.

V-belt tension adjustment
A V-belt is used to transmit power from the crankshaft to the alternator (in the engine 1.2 also on the coolant pump).

A V-belt that is too loose is slipping, which shortens its service life. On the other hand, a too tightly stretched belt stresses the alternator bearings. This bar must transfer the power of the row 2 ..3 kW
