The batteries used today are maintenance-free. Their control is therefore limited to the measurement of nominal voltage and under load. Voltage measurement is performed with a voltmeter after disconnecting the battery and waiting 2 hours. For a fully charged battery, the voltage should be 12.66 V, a loaded w 50% – 12,30 V. When trying to start the engine, the battery voltage should not drop below 9,5 V.
■ The cause of the battery being discharged may be:
– loose alternator V-belt.
– damaged alternator.
– excessive current consumption after stopping the engine,
– damaged battery (too high internal resistance, to accept the charging current from the alternator).
■ A damaged battery is not repairable and must be replaced.
■ The electrolyte level of the individual cells can be topped up with distilled water. Marks for the minimum and maximum electrolyte level are displayed on a transparent wall.
■ The battery terminals must always be kept clean and lightly greased.
■ Water, which will spill onto the lid as the cells are filled. please wipe, as it may cause the battery to self-discharge.
