Japanese upper-class cars can hardly compete with their European counterparts, not because of technical shortcomings, but for a lack of prestige. For a boss who prefers high driving comfort and perfect workmanship, a Japanese car may be the optimal solution. Presented in 2000 year, the second generation of Nissan Maxima QX seems to be an interesting proposition.
Compared to the predecessor model, the new Maxima has an increased body by 30% stiffness, longer wheelbase and external dimensions, as well as larger doors. The enlarged passenger compartment together with the front-wheel drive made it possible, that there is really a lot of space in the interior, and the trunk of the volume 520 dm3 can be considered extensive. The increased thickness of the glass and triple door seals significantly reduce the noise level in the interior.
The strong point of the Maxima is the 6-cylinder, V-shaped engine with a capacity 3 dm3 and power 147 kW. He has got 24 valves, 4 camshafts, variable length intake channels, direct ignition and cooled by a dual circuit system. The optimum operating temperature of the drive unit is also ensured by the oil cooler incorporated in the engine cooling circuit. The drive unit is distinguished by its overload resistance, high work culture and low vibration level. Maxima is offered with manual or automatic, four-speed gearbox.
The redesigned suspension provides high driving comfort and good driving properties. The popular McPherson struts are used at the front, however, the use of an intermediate frame and well-chosen geometry eliminated a typical disadvantage of this solution – "diving" or lifting of the front of the vehicle. The rear axle is a torsion beam suspended on guide columns, cooperating with the trailing arm and Panhard rod attached to the beam with a Scott-Russel joint. This hinge is now behind the beam. The rear axle so designed forces the wheel to move only in the vertical plane, ensuring the largest possible contact area of the tire with the ground and the stability of the vehicle during cornering. Nissan Maxima is equipped with. in ABS systems, EBD i BA, increasing passive safety, driver and passenger airbags and side airbags, automatic air conditioning, as well as a self-dimming rearview mirror.
In the Nissan Maxima, the designers tried to maximize the use of all the best solutions, available to the manufacturer. Potential buyer, in the person of the head of the company, it remains to accept or not – the elegance of the lines of the exterior, the shape of the instrument panel or properly selected suspension characteristics. This class of vehicles does not save on plastics, nor on the quality of workmanship. Even if the largest Nissan does not have the prestige of some European brands, it makes up for this with more practical advantages.
